Casa Magna
Casa Magna Cigars are the result of a 2008 collaboration between Manuel Quesada and Nestor Plasencia, two of the cigar industry's most respected names. The original Colorado blend was named Cigar Aficionado's #1 Cigar of the Year immediately upon release. Browse all five Casa Magna lines below: Colorado, Connecticut, Oscuro, Liga F, and the VX Anniversary.
The Casa Magna Story
Casa Magna began in 2008 when Manuel Quesada, a Dominican cigar maker who had been in the business since 1974, partnered with Nestor Plasencia, Nicaragua's largest grower of cigar tobacco. Quesada's family built their reputation replicating pre-revolution Cuban cigars using non-Cuban tobacco, eventually renaming their company Quesada to reflect the family-centered philosophy behind it. Plasencia's family, originally from Cuba, relocated to Nicaragua in the late 1950s to rebuild their own cigar operation, and today Nestor Plasencia grows and cures tobacco for some of the industry's most recognized brands, including Rocky Patel and Villiger.
The two men set out to build something that would stand out immediately in a crowded market, and the result exceeded even their own expectations. Casa Magna Colorado Robusto was named Cigar Aficionado's #1 Cigar of the Year for 2008, a genuinely rare distinction for a debut release from a brand-new collaboration. The decision was not without controversy at the time, some critics argued the magazine's ranking gave too much weight to the cigar's accessible price rather than flavor alone, but the recognition cemented Casa Magna's reputation and launched a line that has since expanded into several distinct blends.
Every Casa Magna cigar is handmade at the Plasencia family's Segovia factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, using Cuban-seed tobacco grown primarily in the Estelí and Jalapa valleys, two regions whose tobacco delivers genuinely different characteristics that Quesada and Plasencia layer together across the different Casa Magna blends.
Casa Magna Colorado - The 2008 Cigar of the Year
Colorado is the original Casa Magna blend and the release that won Cigar Aficionado's top honor in 2008. A true Nicaraguan puro, wrapper, binder, and filler are all grown in Nicaragua, combining Estelí and Jalapa tobacco for a full-bodied, richly flavored smoke built around coffee, leather, cedar, and a hint of raisin sweetness. It remains the line most closely associated with the Casa Magna name and the standard other blends in the collection are measured against.
Smokenza carries the full Colorado range: Robusto 27, Robusto Bundle of 30, Torito 27, Gran Toro 27, and Belicoso 27.
Casa Magna Connecticut
Casa Magna Connecticut takes the same Nicaraguan tobacco core and wraps it in a milder Connecticut Shade leaf, producing a smoother, more approachable smoke than the bolder Colorado while still carrying genuine Nicaraguan depth underneath. This is the line most often recommended to smokers who want the Casa Magna name and construction quality without the full intensity of the brand's darker blends.
Smokenza carries Connecticut Robusto 20, Connecticut Toro 20, and Connecticut Toro Gordo 20.
Casa Magna Oscuro
Oscuro is Casa Magna's darker, bolder expression, built as a Honduran puro line rather than the all-Nicaraguan Colorado. A dark, oily maduro-style wrapper delivers a fuller-bodied smoke with more pronounced sweetness and richness, positioned for smokers who specifically want more intensity than the original Colorado blend provides.
Smokenza carries Oscuro Robusto 30-Bundle, Oscuro Churchill Gordo 27, and Oscuro Belicoso 30-Bundle.
Casa Magna Liga F
Liga F is described as a bolder evolution of the original Casa Magna blend, built around a Sun Grown Corojo wrapper for a genuinely fuller, more robust smoking experience than the Colorado line it's descended from. This is the line to reach for if you already know and like Casa Magna Colorado and want to explore a more intense version of that same core identity.
Smokenza carries Liga F Robusto 10 and Liga F Churchill 10.
Casa Magna VX Anniversary
VX Anniversary is a limited, commemorative release within the Casa Magna portfolio, marking a milestone for the brand with its own distinct blend and presentation.
Smokenza carries the Casa Magna VX Anniversary 15.

Frequently Asked Questions About Casa Magna Cigars
Who Makes Casa Magna Cigars?
Casa Magna Cigars are the result of a 2008 collaboration between Manuel Quesada, a Dominican cigar maker in the business since 1974, and Nestor Plasencia, Nicaragua's largest grower of cigar tobacco. Every Casa Magna cigar is handmade at the Plasencia family's Segovia factory in Estelí, Nicaragua.
Is Casa Magna a Good Cigar Brand?
Yes. Casa Magna Colorado Robusto was named Cigar Aficionado's #1 Cigar of the Year immediately upon its release in 2008, a genuinely rare achievement for a brand's debut cigar. Multiple releases across the Casa Magna portfolio have since earned 90-plus point ratings from Cigar Aficionado.
What Is the Difference Between Casa Magna Colorado and Oscuro?
Colorado is an all-Nicaraguan puro, wrapper, binder, and filler all grown in Nicaragua, combining Estelí and Jalapa tobacco for a full-bodied but balanced smoke. Oscuro is a Honduran puro line with a darker, oilier maduro-style wrapper, producing a fuller-bodied, sweeter, more intense smoke than the original Colorado.
Are Casa Magna and Quesada Cigars the Same Brand?
Casa Magna is a specific line created by Quesada in partnership with Nestor Plasencia, distinct from Quesada's own core cigar lineup, though both are produced under Manuel Quesada's broader company. Casa Magna is specifically a Nicaraguan-focused collaboration, while Quesada's other releases draw more directly on the company's Dominican roots.
What Regions of Nicaragua Does the Tobacco Come From?
Casa Magna's Nicaraguan-based lines use Cuban-seed tobacco grown primarily in the Estelí and Jalapa valleys, two regions that deliver genuinely different flavor characteristics. Estelí tobacco tends to bring more strength and spice, while Jalapa contributes a smoother, more refined character, and the blends layer both together.
