How Much Nicotine Is in a Cigar? Complete Guide

The Short Answer

A single cigar contains roughly 26 mg to 630 mg of nicotine, depending almost entirely on how much tobacco is inside it. A cigarillo sits at the low end near 26 to 50 mg. A standard robusto lands somewhere around 150 to 300 mg. A large Churchill can exceed 600 mg.

That is the amount held in the leaf. It is not the amount that reaches your bloodstream. A cigar smoker who does not inhale absorbs only a small fraction of it, which is why the total figure on its own tells you very little about how a cigar will actually feel.

Those two numbers get confused constantly, and that confusion is the reason most people ask this question in the first place.

Where the Numbers Actually Come From

Nearly every article on how much nicotine is in a cigar repeats the same range: 100 to 200 mg. That figure traces back to a single 2007 municipal health department bulletin. It has been copied so many times that it now reads like settled fact.

The best available dataset is more recent and considerably more precise. In 2022, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine published a commissioned analysis for its report on premium cigars. Researchers purchased 58 cigars across 21 brands, weighed and measured each one, then sent 3 gram samples to Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center for gas chromatography analysis.

That gives us per-cigar nicotine figures for specific, named products rather than a repeated estimate.

The Pattern Nobody Points Out

Look at the two middle columns rather than the last one.

Nicotine concentration across the entire sample ranged from about 8.5 mg/g to 33 mg/g. That is a four-fold spread. Cigar weight ranged from 2.1 g to 25.8 g. That is a twelve-fold spread.

Weight is the dominant variable. A mild Dominican blend in a large format will hold more total nicotine than a powerful Nicaraguan blend in a small one. The Romeo y Julieta 1875 Nicaragua has one of the lowest concentrations in the entire dataset at 9.78 mg/g, yet it still holds nearly four times the nicotine of a Black & Mild because it weighs four times as much.

If you want a practical takeaway: size predicts nicotine content better than strength does.

Cigar Nicotine vs Cigarette: The Comparison That Gets Misused

A cigarette contains roughly 10 to 12 mg of nicotine. A large cigar can hold fifty times that. Stated bluntly, that comparison is technically accurate and practically misleading.

Three things separate them.

Combustion is partial. Most of a cigarette burns away between puffs. The same is true of a cigar, and more so, because a cigar burns for forty-five to ninety minutes with long gaps between draws. Total content overstates delivery in both products.

Smoke chemistry differs. Cigarette tobacco produces acidic smoke. Nicotine in acidic smoke stays ionized and does not cross the lining of the mouth well, so it has to reach the lungs to be absorbed. Cigar tobacco is fermented at higher pH, producing alkaline smoke. Nicotine in alkaline smoke is un-ionized and passes readily through the mucous membranes of the mouth. This single chemical difference explains almost everything else about cigars: why you do not need to inhale, why the effect builds slowly, and why the buzz arrives late.

Delivery is what matters. When Penn State College of Medicine researchers measured actual smoke output on a machine, small cigars delivered an average of 1.24 mg of nicotine per cigar under standard conditions and 3.49 mg under a more intensive puffing regimen. The reference cigarettes delivered 0.87 mg and 2.13 mg respectively. Small cigars out-delivered cigarettes, but by a ratio of roughly 1.5 to 1, not 20 to 1.

Content is a storage figure. Delivery is an exposure figure. When someone says a cigar has as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes, they are comparing a full fuel tank to a completed journey.

Black and Mild Nicotine Content

This deserves its own section because the commonly cited figure is wrong by roughly a factor of five.

Search results widely claim a Black & Mild contains 100 to 200 mg of nicotine. The lab-measured figures tell a different story:

Black & Mild variantTotal nicotine
Original, wood tip26.2 mg
Casino, plastic tip33.2 mg
Jazz cigarillos33.5 mg

The reason is straightforward. A Black & Mild weighs about 2.5 to 2.9 grams. The 100 to 200 mg range describes a full-size handmade cigar weighing five to ten times more. Applying a large-cigar number to a cigarillo produces a large-cigar answer.

That is not an argument that Black & Milds are gentle. Two points cut the other way.

They are filled with pipe tobacco rather than cigar leaf, which changes the flavour and the burn but not the addictiveness. And research published in Nicotine & Tobacco Research comparing a Black & Mild session against a cigarette found that while the plasma nicotine increase was smaller, the carbon monoxide increase was roughly three times higher. Smaller nicotine load, larger exposure to combustion products.

There is also a behavioural difference that matters more than the milligram count. Black & Milds are commonly inhaled, unlike premium cigars. Inhalation moves nicotine absorption from the mouth to the lungs, which is faster, more efficient, and considerably more habit-forming.

The Black & Mild range sits in our cigar collection alongside the pipe-tobacco products it shares a blend style with.

Do You Inhale Cigar Smoke?

No. Cigar smoke is drawn into the mouth, held briefly, and released. It does not go into the lungs.

This is not etiquette or tradition. It follows directly from the smoke chemistry described earlier. Alkaline cigar smoke delivers nicotine through the lining of your mouth without ever reaching the lungs. Inhaling adds nothing you want and a great deal you do not.

What happens if you inhale anyway:

  1. Nicotine absorption accelerates sharply, which is the single most common cause of dizziness and nausea in new cigar smokers
  2. The smoke is unfiltered, considerably denser than cigarette smoke, and usually triggers coughing
  3. According to Mayo Clinic, cigar smokers who inhale face risks comparable to those of cigarette smoking

One point worth stating honestly. A study published in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, which tracked labelled smoke particles, found that participants inhaled cigar smoke to some degree regardless of whether they believed they were inhaling. Intent and behaviour do not always match. Slowing down and staying conscious of where the smoke stops is a real skill, not an automatic one.

Retrohaling, gently pushing smoke out through the nose, is different from inhaling. The smoke never enters the lungs. It is worth learning once you are comfortable, because a large share of what you perceive as flavour is actually aroma.

Why Do Cigars Make You Dizzy?

The sensation has a name among cigar smokers: cigar sickness, or being nic sick. It is a mild, temporary form of nicotine overexposure, and it is common enough that most regular smokers have experienced it at least once.

Symptoms usually arrive in stages. Increased salivation first, then light-headedness, then sweating and nausea, and in a bad case a headache that outlasts the cigar.

Four things cause it, and all four are avoidable.

Puffing too quickly. Nicotine absorbed through the mouth reaches peak blood levels considerably more slowly than nicotine absorbed through the lungs. You can take in far more than you intend before you feel anything. By the time the first signal arrives, more is already in transit. One puff every thirty to sixty seconds is the standard pace, and it also keeps the cigar burning cool enough to taste properly.

Starting too large. Ring gauge compounds faster than most people expect. Tobacco volume scales with the square of the diameter, so moving from a 5 x 50 robusto to a 6 x 60 gordo increases the tobacco mass by roughly 70 percent, not the 20 percent the numbers suggest at a glance.

Smoking on an empty stomach. Nicotine lowers blood sugar. Combining that with an empty stomach produces the classic sweaty, shaky, nauseated version of cigar sickness. Eat first. Keep water nearby.

Accidental inhalation. Covered above, and it is the fastest route to feeling unwell.

If it happens: put the cigar down, get fresh air, drink water, and eat something with sugar in it. Nicotine has a half-life of roughly two hours, and most people feel substantially better within fifteen to sixty minutes. It passes. It is not dangerous at these levels, but it is genuinely unpleasant and there is no reason to push through it.

Estimating the Nicotine in a Cigar You Own

Manufacturers do not print nicotine content on cigar packaging, and there is no requirement that they do. You can get a workable estimate anyway.

Total nicotine (mg) ≈ cigar weight in grams × 15

Fifteen mg/g is close to the midpoint of the measured range. Test it against the lab figures: an ACID Blondie weighs 5.3 g, which predicts about 80 mg against a measured 85 mg. A Macanudo Hyde Park Café weighs 17 g, predicting 255 mg against a measured 296 mg.

Use 10 for a mild Connecticut-wrapped blend and 25 for a full-bodied Nicaraguan puro if you want to bracket the range. It will not be exact, but it will put you in the right order of magnitude, which is all anyone needs.

The far more useful version of this for a beginner: a cigar that weighs half as much delivers roughly half the nicotine. Format is the lever you control.

Choosing a Lower-Nicotine Cigar as a Beginner

Everything above points in one direction. If you want a manageable first cigar, the format matters more than the blend, and the blend still matters.

Go smaller first. A corona or petit corona holds substantially less tobacco than a toro. A thirty to forty-five minute cigar is a better first experience than a ninety minute one, and you can always light another.

Start with Connecticut Shade. These wrappers tend to sit at the milder end of the range and carry cream, cedar, and light coffee notes that are easy to follow. The best cigars for beginners collection is built around exactly this profile.

Choose brands with consistent construction. A tight draw makes people puff harder, which delivers more nicotine faster and produces the harsh, hot smoke that ruins a first cigar. Macanudo, Ashton, Arturo Fuente, and Romeo y Julieta all appear in the lab dataset above and all have long records of even, predictable burn.

Consider infused blends if traditional tobacco notes feel unfamiliar. ACID by Drew Estate sits at the approachable end here, and the Blondie format in particular is one of the lightest cigars in the entire tested sample at 85 mg. The wider flavored cigars range covers this category in full.

Do not feel obliged to finish. Setting a cigar down at the halfway point is completely normal and cuts your total exposure roughly in half. Nobody is keeping score.

Health Context

Nicotine is addictive in every form, and the delivery method does not change that. Beyond nicotine, the relevant facts are these.

Cigar smoke contains more tar than cigarette smoke and exposes the smoker to higher levels of carbon monoxide. Regular cigar smoking is associated with increased risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, oesophagus, and larynx, and it raises risk of these even in smokers who do not inhale, because the smoke still contacts those tissues. Cigar smoking is also linked to gum disease, tooth loss, and cardiovascular disease. For those who inhale, the risk profile approaches that of cigarette smoking.

No form of tobacco use is risk-free, and nothing in this article should be read as suggesting cigars are a safer alternative to any other product. If you are considering quitting, resources are available through your national quitline.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much nicotine is in one cigar?

Between roughly 26 mg and 630 mg depending on size, based on lab analysis of 58 cigars published by the National Academies in 2022. A cigarillo is near the low end, a robusto sits around 150 to 300 mg, and a large Churchill can exceed 600 mg. Only a small fraction of that is absorbed when the smoke is not inhaled.

Is a cigar equal to a pack of cigarettes?

In total nicotine content, a large cigar is roughly comparable to a pack. In actual delivery, no. Machine testing shows small cigars deliver about 1.5 times the nicotine of a single cigarette, not twenty times.

How much nicotine is in a Black and Mild?

Around 26 to 34 mg per cigar according to lab measurement, not the 100 to 200 mg widely quoted online. The lower figure reflects its small size at roughly 2.5 to 2.9 grams.

Do you inhale cigar smoke?

No. Cigar smoke is held in the mouth and released. Its alkaline chemistry allows nicotine to be absorbed through the lining of the mouth without reaching the lungs.

Why do cigars make you dizzy?

Too much nicotine reaching your bloodstream too quickly. The usual causes are puffing too fast, choosing an oversized cigar, smoking without eating first, or inhaling. It typically resolves within fifteen to sixty minutes with fresh air, water, and food.

Does a cigar have more nicotine than a cigarette?

Yes in total content, by a wide margin. A cigarette holds around 10 to 12 mg while a cigar holds anywhere from 26 to over 600 mg. Absorbed nicotine per session is far closer between the two.

Which cigars have the least nicotine?

Small formats. Cigarillos and petit coronas hold the least tobacco and therefore the least nicotine. Among the tested premium cigars, the ACID Blondie at 85 mg and the Macanudo Petit Corona at 99 mg were the lowest.

Does the wrapper affect nicotine content?

Less than most people assume. Wrapper leaf is a small proportion of a cigar's total mass, so filler blend and overall size dominate. Concentration across the tested sample varied about four-fold while weight varied twelve-fold.

How long does a cigar buzz last?

Nicotine's half-life is roughly two hours. A mild buzz typically fades within fifteen to sixty minutes, though a heavier session can leave lingering fatigue or a headache for several hours.
