Oliva Serie V Melanio - Sampler of 6 Cigars

The Oliva Serie V Melanio Sampler 6 puts the full Melanio range in one pack: three sizes, each in the natural and Maduro wrapper. At $54.99, 40% off the $91.65 list price, it works out to about $9.17 per cigar, which is less than the $12.00 per cigar you pay for a Melanio Churchill box of 10.

Every cigar uses a Nicaraguan binder and filler. The natural wrapper is Ecuadorian Sumatra and the Maduro wrapper is a Mexican San Andres leaf. The naturals bring cedar, earth, pepper and baking spices, and the Maduros add espresso, earth and a touch of sweetness. Both are full-bodied.

The pack includes a Churchill, a Figurado and a Lancero in each wrapper. That gives you a thick, slow Churchill, a tapered Figurado and a slim Lancero, so you can compare how size and wrapper change the same blend. Once you find your favorite, move up to a box. Try the Melanio Robusto, the Melanio Maduro Figurado or the Melanio Maduro Torpedo.

How to smoke the sampler

1. Start with the natural Lancero. It is the slimmest, so it shows the blend most clearly.
2. Move to the natural Churchill, then the natural Figurado, to see how size changes the pace and the pepper.
3. Smoke the Maduros on a second day. Their espresso and sweetness stand out best when your palate is fresh.
4. Note your favorite and buy that size by the box.
