The longest, darkest Cohiba Black, made for a slow after-dinner session at about $20.40 a cigar.

Cohiba Black Churchill is the 7 x 49 in the Black line of the Cohiba range. The line was introduced in 2006 around a deeply fermented Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper, with an aged Dominican binder and Dominican and Mexican long filler, hand-rolled in the Dominican Republic. A box holds 25 cigars at $509.99 against an $849.98 list price, which works out to roughly $20.40 each.

The wrapper is dark and glossy, and the flavor follows. Retailers and reviewers describe earth, espresso, leather, chocolate and a dark sweetness, with a peppery depth and a smooth but robust body. A trade tasting also noted a raisin-like sweetness with spicy undertones. At 7 inches it is the longest vitola in the line, taking roughly 75 to 105 minutes, so it suits a quiet evening.

It is a premium Maduro, and not every taster agrees on every cigar. Reviewers call it perfectly constructed, consistent, smooth and the dark, rich smoke they wanted. One trade tasting found persistent waxy notes that held the score back. A slow pace and a good rest in your humidor help. For a thicker ring in the same blend, see the Cohiba Black Gigante. For a shorter smoke, try the Cohiba Black Corona.

What to expect:

  1. Opening: earth, dark sweetness and a light pepper
  2. Middle: espresso, chocolate and leather
  3. Finish: raisin sweetness, spice and a smooth, dark close

Who it suits:

  1. Maduro smokers who want a long, dark cigar
  2. Anyone planning a slow evening with coffee or bourbon
  3. Buyers who prefer a smooth Maduro over a harsh one

For a milder Cohiba, try the Cohiba Rubicon Gigante. For a bolder blend with a Colorado wrapper, see the Cohiba Nicaragua N60. More boxes are in our premium cigar collection.

For adults 21+ only. Contains nicotine, which is addictive.

Flavor progression:

  1. First third: earth, dark sweetness, light pepper
  2. Second third: espresso, chocolate, leather
  3. Final third: raisin sweetness, spice, smooth finish

Notes are from retailer descriptions and reviews, not from the manufacturer.
