There are a lot of genuine "firsts" attached to this cigar. Avo Syncro Nicaragua marked the first time Avo used Nicaraguan tobacco in any of its blends, sourced specifically from the nutrient-rich, black volcanic soils of Ometepe. It was also the first regular-production Avo cigar to ever be box-pressed, and the first regular-production box-pressed cigar to come out of Davidoff's own factory in the Dominican Republic. The name itself points to the idea behind the blend: synchronization between genuinely different tobacco traditions, Nicaraguan Ometepe leaf alongside Dominican Piloto Cubano, San Vicente, and a hybrid Piloto-Olor tobacco, plus Peruvian long-filler, all wrapped in a dark, oily Ecuadorian Connecticut leaf.

Cigar Aficionado rewarded that ambition with a 93-point rating and a spot on its Top 25 Cigars of 2015, specifically praising how the Toro's blocky dimensions and smart blending let each tobacco express itself individually, leather, minerals, and a dried apricot sweetness standing out clearly rather than blurring together. That complexity shows up immediately on the cold draw, cedar, cream, coffee, spice, and even sugar cookie and clove notes on the shaft and foot, before the first third opens with a genuine pepper bomb balanced by sweetness, creaminess, and an unusual combination of red cherries, honey-roasted peanuts, nougat, and chocolate that more than one reviewer describes as immediately and surprisingly complex.

As the smoke settles into its middle stretch, the profile shifts toward dark roast coffee, bittersweet chocolate, leather, and caramel, with a peppery kick continuing to surface throughout and a creamy, almost vanilla-like sweetness arriving as the cigar approaches the nub. Construction consistently earns praise, a sharp box-press, well-packed without being overly firm, smoothed veins, and an easy-cutting cap. This is a genuinely full-bodied, juicy smoke that rewards patience, taking a minute or two between draws keeps everything in balance and prevents it from running hot, and the payoff is a rich, complex Toro that both novice and veteran smokers consistently rate among the best Avo has ever produced.

Flavor progression:

  1. Opening: a big pepper bomb balanced by sweetness and creaminess, red cherries, honey-roasted peanuts, nougat, and chocolate creating an unusual, immediately complex combination
  2. Mid-smoke: dark roast coffee, bittersweet chocolate, leather, and caramel take over, a peppery kick continuing to surface throughout the middle stretch
  3. Close: a creamy, vanilla-like sweetness arrives near the nub, rounding out a rich, long finish without ever turning bitter
