Description
When Avo Uvezian and master blender Hendrik Kelner wanted a way to honor the farmers, blenders, and rollers who make the Avo name possible, they built the boldest cigar the brand had ever released. Heritage debuted at the 2010 IPCPR trade show wrapped in the exact Ecuadorian Sun Grown Hybrid leaf used on the celebrated 2009 Compañero release, over Dominican binder and a filler blend of Cuban-seed Dominican Ligero, Seco, and Peruvian long-filler tobacco. Cigar Aficionado rewarded it with a 90-point rating, describing a very dark and oily cigar that smokes evenly, starting out a touch papery before warming into a woody, leathery character with genuine apple-like sweetness.
At 6 x 50, the Toro is where most smokers first encounter what makes Heritage genuinely distinct within Avo's broader catalog: real body and intensity rather than the brand's usual mellow, creamy signature. The dark chestnut wrapper, heavier on oils with raised veins and sharp seams, carries a sweet, exotic pre-light aroma of Egyptian musk and loamy soil, with heavier notes of cardamom, clove, and date nutbread on the open end. Once lit, spicy rye bread and pumpernickel grain lead the way, with leather and burnt walnut adding a touch of bitterness that mellows as brown sugar and raw walnuts bring genuine sweetness and balance back into the profile. Wet, sappy wood and heavy leather unload plenty of sun-grown tobacco character in the first third, deepening into cocoa, toast, and sweet cedar with subtle spice as the smoke settles into its core.
It's fair to be direct about one recurring issue several independent reviewers have specifically flagged: a genuinely loose or spongy feel to the binder and filler on individual sticks, sometimes accompanying a tighter draw or a burn that needs an early correction to stay true. This appears often enough across different reviews to be worth knowing rather than dismissing as a one-off. Most experiences, though, still land on the positive side, a rich, complex, full-bodied smoke that reviewers consistently call one of the boldest, most rewarding entries in the entire Avo lineup, genuinely worth the extra intensity if you've already explored the milder Classic and XO lines and want to see what Avo does at full strength.
