Description
In 2010, Avo Uvezian sat down with master blender Hendrik Kelner alongside tobacco experts Eladio Diaz and Manuel Peralta to build a cigar honoring the farmers, blenders, and rollers behind the Avo name. What came out of that collaboration was the boldest line the brand had ever released, and Special Toro, at 6 x 60, is where that boldness gets the most room to stretch out. This is the widest ring gauge in the entire Heritage collection, wrapped in the same oily Ecuadorian Sun Grown leaf found across the line, over Dominican Ligero and Seco tobacco with Peruvian Seco long-filler underneath.
At this scale, the wide ring gauge does real work: it slows the burn considerably, giving the earth, black pepper, roasted nuts, and dark cocoa in this blend far more time to unfold than they'd get in a narrower Robusto or standard Toro. The flavor opens warm and earthy with hints of spice and a genuine sweet undertone, deepening into cedar, oak, and toasted nuts through the middle, with white pepper and an earthy, dark chocolate character carrying the smoke into its final stretch. One reviewer who specifically usually reaches for the Robusto in this line chose the 6x60 knowing he'd be spending real time with it, and it ended up the most enjoyable cigar of that entire session.
Construction and burn quality earn consistent praise here, an even, dependable smoke with no burn or draw issues reported across the majority of reviews, which matters more at this size than at a shorter format since a poor burn has considerably more distance to cause problems. Several longtime Avo smokers specifically describe Special Toro as a more affordable, fuller-bodied alternative to the Avo Classic in the same general size range, genuine intensity and depth at a price point that still makes sense for regular rotation rather than occasion-only smoking.

Flavor progression:
- Opening: a warm, earthy character leads the way, hints of spice and a genuine sweet undertone setting the tone from the wide ring gauge's slow start
- Mid-smoke: cedar, oak, and toasted nuts develop, dark cocoa and roasted nuts building alongside black pepper across an extended middle stretch
- Close: white pepper and earthy dark chocolate carry the finish, the full body staying smooth and consistent to the final draws
