Description
When Alec Bradley launched Prensado in 2009 with just a Robusto and a Churchill, nobody could have predicted the blend would go on to earn Cigar Aficionado's #1 Cigar of the Year with a historic 96 rating in 2011. That same year, with big ring gauge cigars surging in popularity, founder Alan Rubin added the Double T, a 6 x 62 that remains the largest cigar the Prensado line has ever produced.
The blend inside the Double T is identical to every other Prensado vitola: a Trojes Corojo 2006 wrapper, harvested in Honduras' Jalapa Valley that same year and fermented and aged through mid-2008 before ever touching a cigar, wrapped around a Nicaraguan Jalapa binder and a filler blend of Honduran and Nicaraguan long-fillers. What changes at 62 ring gauge is scale. Alec Bradley itself noted the shape was chosen specifically to deliver a big salvo of potent, ultra-creamy, naturally sweet tobacco flavor, and reviewers have consistently found that description accurate, espresso and cocoa building through the middle and later stages, layered against sweet wood, coffee, and an ample dose of spice that never tips into harshness.
Getting the box press right on a cigar this size wasn't simple. Rubin has said it took Alec Bradley three months of experimentation to figure out how to box-press the Double T without leaving a hard, squared edge, the kind that makes a cigar uncomfortable to carry or store. The result is a rounded, substantial press that holds the cigar's shape while still feeling natural in the hand. This is not a cigar built for someone easing into premium smoking. The earth tones and spice here run intense at times, and the Prensado line as a whole has always leaned toward veteran smokers who want full flavor without apology. But the opening notes, sweet wood and smooth coffee, offer an accessible entry point even for those newer to bigger ring gauges, before the smoke deepens into the rich, complex territory the Double T is known for.
