In 2006, when smaller ring gauges were the industry's dominant trend, Alan Rubin decided to bet against it. Maxx launched that year as a 10th anniversary celebration of Alec Bradley's founding, and Super Freak is the line's biggest statement: 8½ inches long at 60 ring gauge, the largest cigar Alec Bradley has ever produced.

Rubin has described the decision plainly: at the time, traditional, smaller ring gauge cigars were in vogue, and he wanted to buck that trend deliberately. His challenge was building a large-format cigar with genuine flavor and value rather than size for its own sake, and to do that he pulled tobacco from five different countries. A Nicaraguan Habano wrapper covers a Costa Rican binder, unusual on its own, wrapped around a four-country filler blend combining Colombia, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Honduras. The result earned Maxx a 91-point rating from Cigar Aficionado, with the panel specifically noting a sweet wood flavor with toast and spice notes that continues to improve as it's smoked.

At this scale, Super Freak delivers a long, unhurried session, generally around two and a half hours, built around leathery, herbal, and woody character with a slight licorice sweetness running throughout. Other reviewers have found cocoa, coffee, and earth notes layered against that base, with a natural sweetness lingering on the finish. Strength assessments vary somewhat depending on the source, some describe it as medium-bodied, others note a genuine nicotine kick that can be more than expected for a cigar this large, so it's worth approaching your first one with a reasonable meal in you and time to spare. Construction has generally held up well across reviews, an even burn and solid draw despite the imposing size, and the price has consistently been called reasonable given how much cigar you're actually getting.
