Description
The most widely reviewed size in the Kintsugi line, and a practical way to experience the Japanese-inspired philosophy behind Alec and Bradley Rubin's third full-production cigar. At 5 x 50, the Robusto delivers the same story-driven blend in a more compact, everyday format than the Toro.
The name draws from Kintsugi, the centuries-old Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold or silver lacquer, making the mended piece more beautiful than the original. Bradley Rubin has described the cigar industry as somewhat fractured, and the brothers built this blend around the idea that cigars, like the gold lacquer, act as a genuine bonding agent, something that brings people together across differences. That philosophy shows up in the construction: a Honduran Trojes Habano wrapper, medium brown with a slight rosado tint and only modest surface oil, layered over dual binders from Honduras and Nicaragua, with filler tobacco from both countries as well.
Sliding a fresh Robusto out of its cellophane brings woody aromas of baking spices and nuts to the nose, and the cold draw delivers hints of nuts and anise with real sweetness before it's even lit. Once fired, notes of cinnamon, espresso, and pepper meld with traces of honey, a combination that several dedicated reviews single out as the Robusto's signature profile. The construction is generally firm with a clear, easy draw, and the smoke stays medium-bodied throughout, approachable enough for smokers new to premium cigars while still offering enough genuine complexity to hold a veteran's interest. It's a fitting introduction to a blend built specifically around the idea that the most interesting things are often the ones that have been carefully put back together.

Flavor progression:
- Opening: nuts and anise with real sweetness on the cold draw, baking spice aromas building from the wrapper before the first light
- Mid-smoke: cinnamon, espresso, and pepper meld together, traces of honey rounding out the developing profile
- Close: earth, herbal, and leather notes settle into the retrohale, the medium body staying consistent through to the final draws
