Description
American Classic was a genuine hit for Alec Bradley, mild-bodied, flavorful, and priced for everyday enjoyment. American Sungrown took that same beloved recipe and gave it a considerably darker personality. Same Nicaraguan filler from the soil-rich Estelí and Condega regions, same Jalapa binder, but instead of the original's Honduran Connecticut-seed wrapper, this version wears a sun-grown Habano leaf grown in Jalapa, Nicaragua, making it a genuine all-Nicaraguan puro rather than a multi-country blend.
Sam Phillips, Alec Bradley's vice president of marketing at the time of release, described the change directly: it has more body and more spice than American Classic, a nice little spice bomb with a darker element running through it. The Torpedo here, at 6⅛ x 52, presents a dark, oily wrapper with a silky complexion and coffee bean coloring that gives it distinctly maduro-esque qualities, some visible veining and seams included. Rolled at Plasencia Cigars in Estelí, the same factory responsible for several other acclaimed Alec Bradley lines, this Nicaraguan puro earned a 91-point rating from Cigar Aficionado.
The flavor experience most reviewers describe is genuinely rich: thick, earthy, chocolatey smoke with nutty and peppery character, a slight sweetness and savory note lingering on the finish, complex spices balanced against an unexpected apple-sweetness with hints of nuts and cedar. One longtime fan of the original American Classic specifically noted a red grape freshness coming through on the pre-light draw before the leather and pepper notes settle into a smooth, dark cocoa finish by the end. Reception has been overwhelmingly positive across independent reviews, though it's fair to note at least one reviewer found the Toro size in this line comparatively flat and unremarkable, a reminder that individual palates and even individual sticks can vary. For most smokers, though, this is described as a modern-day classic in its own right, a long-lasting, medium to full-bodied smoke with a great burn and an easy draw that's earned a permanent home in more than a few humidors.

Flavor progression:
- Opening: a slightly resistant draw reveals genuine tobacco flavor with a hint of pepper and a noticeable red grape freshness, spicy on the pre-light
- Mid-smoke: complex spices develop alongside an apple-sweetness, nuts, cedar, toffee, and earth building into a thick, chocolatey, nutty core
- Close: leather and pepper notes become muted, resolving into a smooth, dark cocoa finish with lingering savory sweetness
