Description
The only shaped cigar in the New World Oscuro lineup. A 5.5 x 55 Belicoso where the tapered head puts the dark Nicaraguan Oscuro wrapper at its most concentrated for the first inch before the ring opens into the full body of the blend.
Every other vitola in the New World Oscuro collection at Smokenza is a parejo: a straight-sided cigar with a consistent ring gauge from foot to head. The Robusto, the Toro, the Gordo, and the Double Corona are all cut at a rounded cap. The Belicoso is the exception. It is a figurado, a shaped cigar with a tapered, pointed head that narrows the draw diameter for the first inch or so before the ring gauge opens to the full 5.5 x 55 body.
This distinction matters in a very specific way. In a cigar with a tapered head, the first draws are pulled through a narrower opening than the body's ring gauge would suggest. At the tip, the ratio of wrapper to filler per draw is higher than it will be once the smoke reaches the body. For the New World Oscuro's dark Estelí wrapper, which is the most flavor-intensive element of the blend, this means the opening of the Belicoso is the most wrapper-forward moment in the entire Oscuro lineup.
The spice and chocolate that the dark Nicaraguan Oscuro delivers arrives with more concentrated force through a Belicoso tip than through any of the box-pressed formats. Then, as the head burns down to the full 55-ring body, the Jalapa binder's sweetness integrates, the three-region filler opens, and the session transitions into the familiar caramel, espresso, earth, and nutty complexity that the blend is known for across all its formats.
The Belicoso is the cigar for smokers who specifically enjoy the figurado experience: the dramatic opening through the tapered tip, the transition as the ring gauge widens, and the subsequent session at full body. AJ Fernandez's Estelí factory handles shaped cigars with the same attention to construction as the straight vitolas, and the dark Oscuro wrapper holds the taper cleanly without the cracking or unraveling that poorly constructed Belicosos are prone to.

Flavor progression:
- First inch (through the tapered head): the most wrapper-forward moment in any Oscuro vitola, dark Estelí wrapper delivering concentrated spice and chocolate through the narrowed draw
- First third (transitioning to body): Jalapa binder sweetness integrating as the ring gauge opens to 55, the session shifting from wrapper-dominated to balanced
- Second third: caramel, espresso, earth, and wood from the three-region filler at full expression, the nutty Ometepe Viso complexity building
- Final third: herbal and cedar, Jalapa sweetness carrying through to a clean close
