Description
The newest blend in the New World family and the one built around a concept that most premium cigars do not attempt: one farm, from wrapper to binder to the majority of the filler. Every leaf in the Dorado Toro grew in the same Estelí soil, under the same sun, from the same growing season.
Most Nicaraguan cigars blend tobacco from multiple growing regions because different areas of the country produce different qualities. Jalapa gives sweetness. Condega gives depth. Ometepe gives complexity. The San Diego farm in the Puro Especial gives mineral character. This regional blending philosophy has driven AJ Fernandez's work across his entire catalog. The New World Dorado is a deliberate departure from it.
When AJ Fernandez began harvesting from his Dorado farm in Estelí for the first time, he decided to showcase what that single plot of land could produce on its own. The sun-grown Habano wrapper, the Criollo '98 binder, and the majority of the long-filler all come from the Dorado farm. Only a portion of the filler draws from supplemental Condega and Estelí leaf. Cigar Dojo's detailed review of the Toro called this "a rare occasion of authentic newness" in premium cigars: not a new combination of familiar ingredients but a new soil expressing itself in all three components simultaneously.
The sun-grown Habano wrapper is what the eye notices first. Unlike the shade-grown Connecticut that blocks sunlight to produce thin, mild leaf, or the fermented dark Oscuro wrapper, the Dorado's sun-grown Habano grows in direct Nicaraguan sunlight. The plant responds by producing more oils, more color, and more flavor in the leaf. The result is a dark caramel to colorado wrapper with visible surface oiliness and a pliable, thick feel that Cigar Advisor describes as "pretty thick and pliable, too." On the Toro the wrapper contributes immediately from the first draw: dry cedar, cocoa, and pepper in the opening, with a maple syrup sweetness that buyers specifically note as one of the Dorado's most distinctive characteristics.
The construction is a Cuban-press, a softer box press without sharp corners, which gives the Toro a different feel in the hand from AJ Fernandez's typical hard box press on lines like the Oscuro and the Bull. The cigar is rolled at AJ's San Lotano factory in Ocotal, Nicaragua, a different production facility from his main Tabacalera AJ Fernandez operation in Estelí. All four Dorado vitolas are presented in flat-style boxes of 10, individually slotted, a premium packaging format that reflects the line's positioning above the standard New World family.

Flavor progression:
- First third: dry cedar and cocoa from the sun-grown Habano wrapper, pepper and anise on the retrohale, maple syrup sweetness joining within the first few inches
- Second third: vanilla and caramel notes developing alongside the cocoa and leather, espresso coming forward, baking spices from the Criollo '98 binder
- Final third: graham cracker, charred wood, cocoa, leather, the single-farm terroir cohesive to the nub
