How Many Cigarettes Is a Backwood? Nicotine, Tobacco and Smoke Compared

WARNING: This product contains nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive chemical.

Quick answer: By nicotine content, one Backwood equals roughly 2 to 5 cigarettes. Lab testing published by the National Academies measured about 28 mg of nicotine in a Backwoods Original and about 50 mg in a Backwoods Honey Berry. An average cigarette holds about 10 to 12 mg. That makes a Backwood a fraction of a pack, not a full pack.

The real answer depends on more than the number on the label. It depends on which flavor you smoke, how much tobacco is in the stick, and above all whether you inhale. This guide walks through all three with the actual figures, so you can compare a Backwood and a cigarette on facts rather than smoke-shop folklore.

If you are new to the brand, start with our guide on what Backwoods cigars are and come back here for the numbers.

The Numbers at a Glance

ProductTotal nicotine in the tobaccoTobacco weightCigarette equivalent (nicotine)

Backwoods Honey Berry50.44 mg2.7 gabout 4 to 5 cigarettes
Average cigarette10 to 12 mgunder 1 g1 cigarette
Pack of 20 cigarettes200 to 240 mgunder 20 g20 cigarettes

Backwoods figures come from Table F-19 of the National Academies of Sciences 2022 report on premium cigars, which lab-tested dozens of named cigar products. The cigarette range is the commonly cited average for nicotine contained in the tobacco of one cigarette.

One caveat before the math: the National Academies figures are single-sample measurements for each product. Nicotine varies between batches and even between sticks in the same pouch, so treat these as solid reference points rather than a guarantee for every cigar.

How Many Cigarettes Is a Backwoods by Nicotine Content?

Nicotine content is the cleanest way to compare the two, because it measures the same thing in both products: how much nicotine sits in the tobacco before you light it.

The answer changes by flavor. That surprises most smokers, who assume every Backwoods cigar carries the same strength because they share the same 4.5-inch size and Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper.

How many cigarettes is a Backwood Original?

The Backwoods Original tested at 27.93 mg of nicotine across 2.1 grams of tobacco. Divide that by a cigarette's 10 to 12 mg and you get about 2.3 to 2.8 cigarettes per stick.

In plain terms, one Original holds roughly the nicotine of two and a half cigarettes. It is the baseline Backwood with no flavor infusion, and it sits at the lower end of the cigarillo range.

How many cigarettes is a Backwood Honey Berry?

The Backwoods Honey Berry tested much higher, at 50.44 mg of nicotine in a 2.7-gram stick. That works out to about 4 to 5 cigarettes per Backwood.

That is close to double the original. If you have ever felt that a Honey Berry hits harder than you expected for a sweet, mellow-smelling cigar, the lab numbers back you up.

Why Two Backwoods Can Differ So Much

Two things drive the gap between the Original and the Honey Berry.

  1. More tobacco. The Honey Berry sample weighed 2.7 grams against 2.1 grams for the Original. More leaf means more nicotine, even before blend differences.
  2. Denser nicotine in the leaf. The Honey Berry measured 18.68 mg of nicotine per gram of tobacco. The original measured 13.30 mg per gram.

A separate CDC-led study published in Tobacco Regulatory Science (Lawler et al., 2017) tested Backwoods Wild Rum at 19.5 mg per gram, which is in the same range as the Honey Berry. So the Original is not the only reference point. Flavored Backwoods have tested stronger by weight in more than one study.

The National Academies did not test every flavor, so there is no lab figure for Honey Bourbon, Russian Cream or Dark Stout. A fair working assumption is that most current flavors land somewhere between the two tested sticks: roughly 2 to 5 cigarettes of nicotine each.

Backwood vs Cigarette: Tobacco Weight

Nicotine is one comparison. Tobacco weight is another, and it matters because tobacco weight drives how much smoke, tar and combustion byproduct you get, not just nicotine.

The backwood vs cigarette weight gap looks like this:

  1. A cigarette holds less than 1 gram of tobacco, according to the National Cancer Institute.
  2. A Backwood holds 2.1 to 2.7 grams in the tested samples, which matches the NCI's figure of about 3 grams for a typical cigarillo.

By weight, one Backwood carries at least two to three cigarettes' worth of tobacco. Every gram of that is real leaf. Unlike most machine-made cigarillos, Backwoods use a whole Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper rather than a reconstituted sheet, which our cigar anatomy guide explains in more detail.

Here is the part that catches people off guard. Cigarette tobacco is actually more nicotine-dense than Backwoods Original filler. The same CDC study measured cigarette filler at an average of 19.2 mg of nicotine per gram, against 13.30 mg per gram for the Original. A Backwood carries more nicotine overall only because it carries so much more tobacco.

Is a Backwoods Equal to a Pack of Cigarettes?

No. This is the most repeated claim about Backwoods, and the lab data does not support it.

A 20-cigarette pack holds about 200 to 240 mg of nicotine in total. Against that:

  1. One Backwoods Original (27.93 mg) equals roughly one-eighth of a pack. It would take about 7 to 9 Originals to match the nicotine in a pack.
  2. One Backwoods Honey Berry (50.44 mg) equals roughly one-fifth to one-quarter of a pack. It would take about 4 to 5 Honey Berry sticks to match a pack.

So is a Backwood equal to a pack of cigarettes? Not by nicotine content, and not by tobacco weight either. A full pack holds well over 10 grams of tobacco. A Backwood holds under 3.

Where the "one cigar equals a pack" idea comes from

The claim is not invented. It comes from large cigars, and it gets applied to cigarillos by mistake.

The National Cancer Institute notes that a single cigar can potentially provide as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes, and that some premium cigars contain the tobacco of an entire pack. That is accurate for big hand-rolled cigars. In the National Academies tables, large premium cigars ranged from about 99 mg to over 600 mg of nicotine per stick, which is half a pack to several packs.

Backwoods are not large premium cigars. They sit in the cigarillo class, where the same report measured a range of roughly 26 to 86 mg across brands like Backwoods, Black & Mild, Swisher Sweets and Dutch Masters. That is the range to use when comparing a Backwood to cigarettes. Our explainer on what a cigarillo is covers where that size line sits.

If the pack question is really about how long a pouch lasts, that is a different calculation. A standard Backwoods 5 pack holds five sticks, and the full lineup of pouch sizes and cartons is on the Backwoods Cigars.

Content vs Delivery: What Actually Reaches You

Everything above measures nicotine in the tobacco. That is not the same as nicotine in your body.

With a cigarette, most smokers absorb only around 1 to 2 mg of the 10 to 12 mg in the stick. The rest burns off in the ash, the sidestream smoke and the butt. Cigars work the same way, but the absorption route changes everything.

So when someone asks how many cigarettes is a Backwood in practical terms, the honest answer is: it depends on how you smoke it. Two smokers can light the same Honey Bourbon and take in very different amounts of nicotine.

Three habits move the number most:

  1. Inhaling or not. This is the single biggest factor, covered in the next section.
  2. How much of the stick you finish. A Backwood runs about 25 to 30 minutes. Stopping halfway roughly halves the tobacco you burn.
  3. Puff frequency. Fast, heavy puffing burns hotter and pulls more smoke per minute.

Do You Inhale a Backwoods?

Traditionally, no. Cigars are meant to be drawn into the mouth, held briefly for flavor, and released. Nicotine still gets absorbed through the lining of the mouth, which the National Cancer Institute confirms, but more slowly and in smaller amounts than through the lungs.

In practice, many Backwoods smokers inhale. Former cigarette smokers in particular tend to keep the habit when they switch to cigarillos, and the small ring gauge and mild-smelling smoke make a Backwood easier to inhale than a big premium cigar.

So do you inhale a Backwood? You are not supposed to, and the difference matters:

  1. Not inhaled: nicotine absorbs through the mouth. Total intake per stick is lower and slower, even though the stick holds 2 to 5 cigarettes' worth.
  2. Inhaled: smoke reaches the lungs, where nicotine absorbs fast. At that point a Backwood behaves much more like several cigarettes smoked back to back.

If you want to smoke a Backwood the way cigars are meant to be smoked, the technique is the same as for any cigarillo. Our guide on how to smoke a Black & Mild covers toasting, pacing and drawing without inhaling, and it applies to Backwoods just as well.

Is a Backwoods Worse Than a Cigarette?

Neither is safe, and the direct comparison depends on how each is used.

On backwoods vs cigarettes health, the main points from the National Cancer Institute are:

  1. Cigar smoking causes cancers of the mouth, throat, larynx, esophagus and lung, whether or not the smoker inhales.
  2. Cigar smokers who do not inhale still have higher rates of lung cancer, heart disease and lung disease than non-smokers.
  3. Risks of oral and esophageal cancer are similar for cigar and cigarette smokers, because cigar smoke bathes the mouth and throat directly and gets swallowed with saliva.
  4. Daily cigar smokers who inhale face increased risk of heart and lung disease.

So is a Backwood worse than a cigarette? Stick for stick, a Backwood burns two to three times the tobacco and carries more total nicotine. If you inhale it, it is plausibly worse than a single cigarette. If you do not inhale, the lung exposure is lower, but the mouth and throat exposure is higher. A pack-a-day cigarette habit versus an occasional Backwood is a different comparison again, because frequency matters as much as the stick.

What no evidence supports is the idea that a Backwood is a lighter or healthier swap for cigarettes. Natural leaf and flavor infusions change the taste, not the risk.

You can read the full findings in the National Cancer Institute's cigar fact sheet.

Backwoods vs Other Cigarillos

How does a Backwood stack up against other cigarillos smokers compared to it? All of them sit in the same 26 to 86 mg range measured by the National Academies, which puts each one somewhere around 2 to 8 cigarettes of nicotine.

The bigger differences are construction and size:

FeatureBackwoodsTypical cigarillo
WrapperWhole Connecticut BroadleafOften homogenized tobacco sheet
Size4.5 in x 32 ring gaugeVaries, often thinner
TipNo tip, frayed footPlastic or wood tip common
Smoke time25 to 30 minutesUsually shorter

Choosing a Backwood by Strength

If nicotine matters to how you choose, here is how the current lineup sorts out, using the lab data where it exists and flavor character where it does not.

  1. Lower end: the Original sits at the bottom of the tested range. On the flavored side, the sweet tier of Honey and Vanilla is the usual starting point for lighter sessions.
  2. Mid-range: Honey Bourbon and Russian Cream are the two most requested flavors. Our Russian Cream taste breakdown covers what to expect from the second.
  3. Higher end: Honey Berry tested at the top of the Backwoods results. Dark Stout, Dark Leaf and Black Russian are the fuller-bodied, more tobacco-forward blends.
  4. Pipe-style: Sweet Aromatic uses a maduro wrapper and a pipe-tobacco sweetness. Here is what Backwoods Sweet Aromatic tastes like.

Body and strength are not the same thing, and a sweet flavor can still carry real nicotine, as the Honey Berry shows. Our guide to cigar strengths explains the difference. Every flavor with its profile is grouped on the Backwoods Flavors collection, and the full brand lineup lives on the Backwoods brand.

If you roll your own instead, the nicotine depends on your filler rather than the wrap. Our Backwoods wraps guide and the Backwoods True Wraps collection cover the leaf on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much nicotine is in one Backwood?

Lab testing published by the National Academies measured 27.93 mg in a Backwoods Original and 50.44 mg in a Backwoods Honey Berry. Other flavors were not tested in that report.

Is a Backwood stronger than a Black & Mild?

They overlap. Both fall within the 26 to 86 mg cigarillo range measured by the National Academies. A Backwood generally carries more tobacco because of its larger size and whole-leaf wrapper.

How many Backwoods equal a pack of cigarettes?

About 7 to 9 Backwoods Originals, or 4 to 5 Backwoods Honey Berry, to match the 200 to 240 mg of nicotine in a 20-cigarette pack.

Does a Backwood give you more nicotine than a cigarette?

Each Backwood contains more total nicotine than one cigarette. How much reaches your body depends mostly on whether you inhale.

Do Backwoods have tar?

Yes. Any burning tobacco produces tar, and a Backwood burns two to three times the tobacco of a cigarette.

How long does one Backwood last?

About 25 to 30 minutes at a steady pace. You can find the history behind the format in our piece on when Backwoods launched.

Are some Backwoods flavors discontinued?

Yes. Several flavors have left the US market over the years. See our list of discontinued Backwoods flavors.

Summary

So, how many cigarettes is a Backwood? By nicotine content, one Backwood equals roughly 2 to 5 cigarettes: about 2.5 for the Original and 4 to 5 for the Honey Berry, based on National Academies lab data. By tobacco weight it is two to three cigarettes or more. It is not equal to a pack. That claim comes from large premium cigars, not cigarillos. The biggest variable is you: inhaling turns a Backwood into something much closer to several cigarettes, while smoking it as a cigar keeps intake slower but still carries real health risks.
